The 92 -93 Varsity Football team had one goal since the begining of training in January. This goal was to "Revive the Pride*'. They knew that hard work would be needed to help them accomplish their goal, and they were willing to put in the time and effort. To revive the pride would mean to play better than recent years in order to come out of the season with a winning record, and go to the playoffs.

The season opener was at home on Hurd Field against the Mules from Wilson. This first game determined the whole outcome of the season, and how good the Rams really were. As the season progressed the team matured becoming one strong rampaging unit, to defeat teams that were thought to be unbeatable by such a team like the South Gate Rams. The Rams anticipated the size disadvan-tage that they would be facing when up against their opponets, with long hours in the weightroom, and constant conditioning through-out the season. As the season came to a close with a 20 -18 victory over the Spartans of Hunt. park. The Rams were soon to once again meet the Wilson Mules in the playoffs. Once again like their previous meeting the Rams had no problem defeating the Mules 35 - 0, advancing them to the second round of the playoffs.

The Rams final game against the Dolphins of Palisades was one in which the defense played a big part. A scoreless game until me third quarter where Rams kicker kicked a field goal to put the Rams ahead. Hopes were high but the game was not over for the defense, when a pass was caught by the Palisades offense putting them ahead and clinching their victory 6 - 3 over the Almighty Rams.

I enjoyed the feeling of competing against other schools to really let them know who's best. . Doing my best to help the team is very fulfilling. At first I was unsure of playing, but I started to look at what I would get out of the experi-ence. I looked forward to the respon-sibility on the team and in life. what I hoped to get out of the experience is discipline.

No matter that the season ended sooner than we would have liked, looking back, we can say "it was one magnificent season!" A season of, definitely, more ups than downs, the team ended the year with a 23 and 4 record . Along the way the Ram Varsity garnered 2 tournament titles and the Central League and Southeastern Conference Championship. Taking the strong Central league qualified the team for the City 4A Championship Playoffs and an opening round over Grant High. The season ended with a hard fought loss to Washington in the Quarter-Finals. Miguel Villegas, Sai Tuialii and Eric Wright led the way offensively and added to the tenacious defense which became a team trademark. Team discipUne and hardnosed play was the key to team success.

Congratulations to all the Varsity players. I hope you'll retain fond memories of the season and a great sense of personal satisfaction for a job well done.

The SG Varsity made history this year. Not only did they win 15 games in a row. They captured the Championships in 2 tournaments--the Garfield tournament and the LA Invitational B Division tournament. Michele Gonzalez was vote MVP in both tournaments. Then, on to Battle the League -- 2 losses to Fremont by 1 point (ouch) put them in a tie for 2nd in league with an 8&3 recod. They also beat Roosevelt (last year's city Champs) by 28 -- the first victory over them in 5 years. They finished the Playoff season in the Quarter fFinals by losing to Crenshaw, the number one seed, by only 8 points. the Ram season ends with a proud 19 & 5 record. Four players averaged 10 points or better per game, and Outstanding Freshman Ruby Maciel averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game, the top scorer and rebounder of the team. Congratulations to all, and yes, he seniors will be missed.
